Brief history of the Maasai market

The Maasai market in Nairobi, Kenya dates back to the trade by-barter era, when Maasai and Kambai women would trade milk for money, and vice versa. When trade by-barter went out of style, the women sought new ways to adapt. They created a market of artisans popular for creating colourful, alluring jewellery, artefacts, and ornaments representing Kenyan culture.

Maasai Market Overview

The market initially began in 1982 along Mombasa Road, and eventually moved to Kijabe Street in 2008 after being relocated from the Globe Cinema roundabout due to the construction of Ngara Road.

As the Maasai market on the back street of Kijabe, along Michuki Park’s fence expanded due to its authenticity, diversity, and tourism, the market traders registered their group as the Maasai Market Handcraft Welfare Association. Today this association is called the Maasai Market Association, and the market has about 500 traders and artisans.

The Maasai Market opens every Tuesday from 6 am to 8 pm when the cars at Michuki Park give way for artisans and traders to display their wares.
